Student Funding and Honors

Conference Funding

EMST supports students in the combined program for conference attendance as follows:

International = up to $1500, Domestic = up to $750

This is per student, per year; if there are funds leftover, you can reapply  and we will try to meet your need. You must be *on the conference program* in order to get this funding.

Please fill out the form below with the following information:

  1. how much you are applying for
  2. brief description of the conference activity
  3. budget breakdown
  4. copy of the conference program and other documentation confirming you are on the program
  5. an explanation of other funding sources you have tried. We will consider requests on a rolling basis; note that this is not intended to be competitive so you can count on these basic caps. You must, however, first use any funding you can get from the GSAS and your own department so that there is a relatively level playing field for everyone in the combined degree program.

Once approved, you will receive a reply with information on how to submit receipts. Note that you may apply for funding either before the conference or after the fact, but reimbursement will take place only after the conference has taken place.

Pre-Dissertation Research Funding

EMST provides first-year students in the combined degree up to $1500 in pre-dissertation summer funding for research travel directed specifically toward developing their dissertation projects. Proposals might include visiting archives, collections, or sites with relevant material. They might also include travel to connect with colleagues with whom you wish to engage at institutions abroad. Please note that this funding is not for general skill acquisition (e.g. paleography or language study).

One-time Discretionary Funding

Students in EMST are eligible to receive up to $1000 in funding toward the acquisition of a specific skill or in targeted support of their academic work. Students are eligible to receive this discretionary funding only once during their time in the combined degree, and only after the completion of their regular coursework. This funding is not available to support conference attendance or participation.

You will be asked to fill out a form with the following information:

  1. the amount requested (up to $1000)
  2. a brief proposal (max 2 pages double-spaced) including specific details on the skill or support for which funding in requested; in the case of skill acquisition, you must explain why the selected program is the best fit for your needs
  3. detailed breakdown of how the funding will be used
  4. a list of other funding sources that you have already pursued and other funding that you have received (n.b. writing “none” or “not applicable” here will automatically result in a request for resubmission)

Once approved, you will receive a reply with information on how to submit receipts. You will receive the funding only once the skill acquisition or support has been completed.
