Pre/Early Modern Forum: Dr. Ewa Kociszewska

The Pre/Early Modern Forum is delighted to announce the upcoming talk by Dr. Ewa Kociszewska from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The event will take place on Zoom (https://yale.zoom.us/j/8472619307) on October 10 at 4:00 pm EST.

Dr. Ewa Kociszewska’s talk is titled “Materials of the Future: Thinking about Time with Precious Vessels from the Late Valois Court,” an abstract of which is included below:

In 1570, on the occasion of the marriage of Charles IX of France with Elizabeth of Austria, Ferdinand II of Tyrol received a gift of four precious vessels, including Cellini’s saltcellar. The set that became a nucleus of the Kunstkammer in Schloss Ambrass was a bricolage of artifacts in different styles, places, and times of production. This talk will consider how the heterochronous gift invited a reflection on the shared past of Valois and Habsburg houses and how the choice of its materials was shaped by future-oriented dynastic thinking at the court of France.

Ewa Kociszewska is Assistant Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Prior to joining the Academy of Fine Arts, she was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Warburg Institute and Junior Research Fellow, St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford. In 2023, she will be a visiting fellow at the Institut national d’histoire de l’art in Paris.
