Pre-Dissertation Research Funding

EMST provides first-year students in the combined degree up to $1500 in pre-dissertation summer funding for research travel directed specifically toward developing their dissertation projects. Proposals might include visiting archives, collections, or sites with relevant material. They might also include travel to connect with colleagues with whom you wish to engage at institutions abroad. Please note that this funding is not for general skill acquisition (e.g. paleography or language study). Students in the program are encouraged, but not required to travel together to save on costs and to continue the intellectual camaraderie of the program off campus. The requirement to submit a 10-15 page double-spaced reflection on your research travel is designed to help jumpstart your writing and to start a conversation about your dissertation plans that will continue into the Professional Skills Workshop (EMST 900) during the spring of your second year in the combined degree.

To apply for funding, please use the form below to provide the following:

(a) a brief proposal (max 2 pages double-spaced) including specifics on your itinerary and agenda, and on how those plans relate to your current/anticipated dissertation project

(b) detailed budget (you should also indicate here other summer funding you have received or for which you have applied, as relevant)

(c) confirmation that you agree to send a 10-15 page double-spaced written reflection on your research to the EMST Chair and the DGS before the start of the fall term

Once approved, you will receive a reply with information on how to submit receipts. For this funding, you must apply prior to the travel itself.

The deadline to submit proposals for summer 2024 is Friday, May 17th, 2024
